MCO Taxi vs Uber, Lyft and Mears Connect: An Honest Comparison
The right ride from Orlando International Airport depends on your destination, group size and priorities. A taxi offers a walk-up, metered trip. Uber and Lyft let you compare prices and request a ride in an app. Mears Connect offers shared shuttles to participating Disney-area hotels. Compare the total for your whole party, not just one person's fare.

How pricing works: meter, demand and per-person fares
Taxi fares from the airport
MCO's taxi guidance says taxicabs picking up at the airport are regulated by the City of Orlando's Vehicle-for-Hire ordinance, which requires fares to be determined by a taximeter. It says flat-rate fees are not authorized.
A metered fare is not a guaranteed total quoted before departure. The journey's distance and time affect the meter, so traffic and the route matter. Ask about the rate and any applicable tolls or airport charges before setting off, rather than assuming every amount is included in an estimate.
MCO also says taxis charge the same rate regardless of passenger count. That is why comparing a vehicle total with a shuttle's per-person fare matters for families. Vehicle capacity and luggage space still limit how many people can travel together.
Uber and Lyft
Uber explains that dynamic pricing can increase prices when many people in the same area request rides. Lyft says pricing depends on factors including ride type, time, traffic and driver availability, and that higher demand can increase prices.
Check both apps for the vehicle size you actually need. A small-car price is not a useful comparison if your party needs a larger vehicle or two cars. Review the current price and terms before requesting; route changes, extra stops and other adjustments can affect the final charge.
Mears Connect
Mears Connect Standard uses per-person pricing. Express is sold as a round-trip service, with a group price and charges for additional passengers. Use its current pricing page to check the relevant ages, party size, direction of travel and fees.
Both services are shared rides according to the operator's FAQ. Express makes your hotel the first stop after leaving the airport and the last stop before returning to the airport; it should not be mistaken for an exclusive private vehicle.
For a fair comparison, price the same journey for everyone traveling. Compare one-way with one-way, or round-trip with round-trip, and check what fees are included. This guide deliberately avoids static price examples that could be mistaken for today's available fare.
When each option may suit you
Consider Uber or Lyft when…
You prefer booking through an app, the available vehicle fits your party and bags, and the current price works for your budget. Check the pickup instructions and estimated arrival before deciding. An attractive fare is useful only if the vehicle meets your needs.
Rideshare can be worth comparing for a direct trip, but it is not automatically the least expensive choice. Check the price at the time you want to travel rather than relying on a screenshot from another day.
Consider Mears Connect when…
Your hotel is on its served-hotel list, you are comfortable sharing transportation, and its total price suits your party. For one or two travelers, comparing a small number of per-person fares with the cost of an entire vehicle is particularly worthwhile.
Check the actual hotel name, not just whether it is “near Disney.” Also compare Standard with Express based on the stopping pattern you prefer. Neither label alone tells you that the vehicle will be private.
Consider a taxi when…
You want to use the official airport stand without opening an app, prefer a vehicle for your own party, or want to discuss your destination with a dispatcher. A suitably sized van may help a larger party travel together without paying a separate fare for each person.
Taxi service is also worth considering when your destination is outside a shuttle's hotel list. Tell the dispatcher where you are going and ask about your vehicle requirements. No option should be treated as an instant pickup or a universal price winner.
Consider a specialist prearranged service when…
You need a particular child-seat setup, equipment accommodation or vehicle specification confirmed before travel. Ask the provider to confirm those requirements explicitly. Do not assume that selecting a premium vehicle automatically includes child seats or wheelchair access.

How to check your taxi fare and report a concern
Start at the official taxi stand and ask questions before departure. The airport's published metering rule is a useful reference if you are unsure how a fare should be calculated. Do not assume a flat-price offer is consistent with that rule.
Before the trip begins, ask to see the meter and understand the displayed rate. Ask about any additional charges and your preferred payment method. Keep the taxi company's name, cab or permit number, trip date and time, and pickup and destination details.
Ask for a receipt and retain any booking or payment records. These practical steps make it easier to explain a concern later; they are not a promise about a particular receipt format or a statement that receipts are legally required.

Groups, car seats and accessibility
Yellow Cab of Orlando has sedans seating up to four passengers, vans seating up to seven, and wheelchair-accessible vans. Passenger seats alone do not establish luggage capacity. Discuss suitcases, strollers and mobility equipment before selecting a vehicle, especially for a full group.
UberXL and Lyft XL list up to six riders. Yellow Cab’s passenger vans seat up to seven; see our van taxi guide for the capacity and luggage comparison. Check actual luggage fit separately.
For an accessible taxi, call ahead to discuss the equipment, whether the passenger remains seated in a wheelchair, and the pickup arrangements. Do not assume an accessible van will be waiting at the stand. Read our wheelchair-accessible taxi guide, then confirm your specific needs with dispatch.
Mears Connect asks travelers who need to remain in a wheelchair to indicate wheelchair passengers when booking. Its FAQ says most standard-size wheelchairs can be accommodated and passengers may not remain seated on scooters during travel. Contact the operator about equipment fit rather than treating general accessibility information as an individual guarantee.
For child seats, check directly with whichever provider you choose. Mears Connect describes different arrangements for motorcoaches and smaller vehicles, with limited car-seat availability in vans. For a taxi or rideshare, confirm the appropriate restraint and installation arrangements before travel; do not assume a seat is supplied.

(407) 222-2222Common questions
Is a taxi or Uber cheaper from Orlando airport?
There is no universal winner. Compare the current rideshare price for the vehicle you need with a metered taxi journey, considering party size, destination and traffic. A taxi meter is not a guaranteed advance total.
Is Mears Connect cheaper than a taxi or Uber?
It depends on the total for your party and the service selected. Standard has per-person pricing, while a taxi carries your party for one metered vehicle fare. Check Mears Connect's current prices and the exact hotel served before comparing.
Are MCO taxis metered, and are flat fares allowed?
MCO's official taxi page says taxicab fares for airport pickups must be determined by taximeter and flat-rate fees are not authorized. Do not treat an informal estimate as a guaranteed taxi-stand fare.
Do taxis have surge pricing at MCO?
Taxi-stand trips use a taximeter rather than an app's demand-based surge price. The total can still vary with the journey's distance, time and applicable charges. “No surge” does not mean a fixed fare.
Where do taxis, Uber/Lyft and Mears Connect pick up?
Taxis use A/B Level 1 and C Level 6. Rideshare uses A/B Level 2, with limited late-night Level 3 pickup, and C Level 6. Mears Connect uses B and C Level 1. Follow current airport and provider instructions.
What works for a family of five to seven with luggage?
Compare a suitable van taxi, larger rideshare option and the shuttle's whole-party total. Yellow Cab vans seat up to seven passengers, but discuss bags and strollers first; seven seats do not guarantee room for every luggage combination.
Which option works for a wheelchair user?
Choose a provider that confirms your specific equipment and boarding requirements. Yellow Cab has accessible vans; call to discuss arrangements. Mears Connect requests wheelchair details during booking. Check rideshare accessibility options directly with the provider.
How can I avoid problems with an airport taxi fare?
Use the official taxi stand, ask about the meter and charges before departure, record the vehicle details and ask for a receipt. MCO's published guidance requires metered fares and says flat-rate fees are not authorized.
How do I report a problem with an Orlando taxi?
Contact the taxi company with the cab number and trip details. For Yellow Cab, call (407) 222-2222. The City of Orlando Vehicle for Hire unit lists (407) 246-2855 and vehicleforhire@orlando.gov for contact.
Do I need to book ahead?
You can use the official MCO taxi stand without making an online reservation. Uber and Lyft rides are requested in their apps; Mears Connect recommends booking online. For a specific taxi vehicle or accessibility requirement, contact dispatch ahead of travel.
Are child seats provided?
Do not assume child seats are included. Confirm the appropriate seat and arrangements with your chosen provider before travel. Mears Connect's FAQ describes vehicle-dependent arrangements and limited car-seat availability in its vans.
Can I pay by card and get a receipt?
Before boarding a taxi, confirm the payment method and receipt format with the driver or dispatcher. Keep any payment or reservation records. For a rideshare or shuttle booking, review the provider's payment and receipt information.
Is Yellow Cab of Orlando part of Mears Connect?
No. Yellow Cab of Orlando, formerly Mears Taxi, is separate from Mears Transportation, which operates Mears Connect.
